World Music Day

June 21, 2007

First, Happy World Music Day.

For me everyday is Music day. My mp3 player sticks with me like we are soulmates! 😀 But today is undoubtedly a special day.

Let’s find out when and where did this divine day start to be celebrated.

World aka International Music Day or Fête de la Musique started to be celebrated from June 21st, 1982, in France. The idea was conceived a year ago by the French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang. He wanted to create a platform to bring together the various local folk musicians who did not get much exposure. This brought about a revolution in the field of music. The France convention was followed by similar Musical fests in other countries, such as Belgium, Britain, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, China, India, Lebanon, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan and other countries. And now this occasion has been embraced with open arms throughout the seven seas and is a huge affair all over the Globe. 😀

Its purpose is to promote music in two ways:

* Amateur musicians are encouraged to perform in the streets. The slogan Faites de la musique (Make music), a homophone of Fête de la Musique, is used to promote this goal.
* Many free concerts are organized, making all genres of music accessible to the public.

This is one of the only nights in the year where, under French law, there is no sound restriction at nighttime. 😛 One can party on without being bothered by neighbors calling the police. 😀

You can read about World Music here… Wikipedia can be pretty useful sometimes 😀

In the morning while listening to Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM, I found myself loving the fact that today was Music Day as I love the idea of celebrating the thing we love the most. Going through the various papers, I found Nepal is celebrating World Music Day by spreading it’s music and brotherhood across the world with the slogan “Music for all, music for all’s access”. More… inside the country, Radio Indigo in Bangalore has started a contest called “Gift of Music” and whoever wins the contest gets to take free guitar lessons… wow!!! A lot more is happening throughout the country …. find out here.
Also, there is this news about India getting “French Kiss”… 😛

No no… you don’t need to inform Bal Thakeray… he doesnt need to know this 😛

Music aficionados across nine Indian cities will get to savour French music as three top women singers of France go on an India tour titled ‘French Kiss’ as part of World Music Day celebrations. Read the news here…

So, that’s what I could give about World Music Day 2007. I know the informations I’ve given here is not exhaustive. I’ve tried. Hope you’ve enjoyed reading. 😀
